Last night read an interview with Hillary Clinton by a journalist from Der Speigel. The journalist talked to her about inequality and mentioned the book by the Frenchman Piketty, which argues that inequality in western capitalism has reached the stage where it threatens to undermine the democratic system. The Der Spiegel asked Clinton about inequalty and she glibly agreed that it had increased in the US and that the middle class no longer had the feeling that it was doing well. She was really quite eloquent about the rights of labour and so on - until the reporter said: Seeing as you earn 200,000 dollars just to give a speech, can you understand why people are cynical about your supposed concern with inequality The reported also pointed out that her husband had earned over 100 million from books, speaking engagements etc since leaving the White House. Thats America said Hillary, we accept that people are different This ended my sympathy for her immediately.
