Last night some douche came in and preached he was raised xtian, - TopicsExpress

Last night some douche came in and preached he was raised xtian, then became and Atheist and then got saved. I listened to his story and got angry that he called himself an Atheist. From his story, he CLEARLY never was one, so I got his email and wrote him today: I took issue with you calling yourself Atheist. You came from a xtain background, raised by an xtian family with xtian values. You grew up with them, you actually did the prodigal son bit. You went out, forgot about all that you grew up with and had fun. Then one day you had an epiphany. You came to the realization you were going down the wrong path and doing all the wrong things, in contradiction to your upbringing. You felt guilt and repented. Now you are saved and back with the god you forgot about. However, you were never Atheist. I am. To truly be an Atheist, you must do research about the faith, or any faith, discover its roots, examine history beyond expounded teaching and place all you learn under the critical eye of logic and see what is reliable, consistent and can be considered evidence. Anecdotes, stories, 2500 year old writings of sheep herders do not even come close to evidence as they dissipate under the pressure of the scientific method. I have spent years doing this. I studied and dissected the Pentateuch and the new testament for about five years as a teenager. No it wasnt my only pursuit, but I was truly searching for a meaning to life because mine was shit (and thats a long, twisted story). I struggled for years to put the pieces together logically and one day I had my own epiphany. Occums Razor: All things being equal, the simplest explanation is most likely the correct one. For all of the contradictions, confusion and stupidity I read in the bible, the conclusion was crystal clear. There can be no god or any sort. None has ever existed and its ludicrous to continue to waste time and energy trying to merge all I had learned into a coherent concept of any god. I still revisit this time and time again. Recently reading Genesis 25. It was brought up during the morning services I am forced to endure. The entire jewish heritage is traded for a bowl of stew. Sure. That makes perfect sense. God really has everything under control! (Its this kind of utter nonsense that make me laugh at anyone who believes that god is in control of anything). To summarize, you have never made the logical decision there is now god. By your own admission, you went along with what felt good. You didnt anguish or even consider god as a concepts nor did you ever question the personality or character flaws of the god of the old testament. Which is odd considering you state you are a psychologist. If you were to read the acts of god as if they were committed by a human being, you would rightly conclude god is a sociopath and needs permanent incarceration or death. I suggest you not refer to yourself as being an Atheist. Its insulting to Atheist to think what you went through made you one, even if just for a few years. Scott.
