Last night tv1 here cancelled its main film and ran a debate on Ukraine. It was just another rehash of Ukraine being full of fascists harking back to WW2 when 1 million Russians of differing backgrounds mostly Ukrainian fought for the NAZIs against the Soviets, not that that is how it is presented though, no context as to why they fought! A touch of my enemy’s enemy is my friend took place on the eastern front as millions of people got caught up in the ideologies of that time and fought for survival! Frankly dammed if they did or didn’t! 7 million Ukrainians were deliberately starved to death over 24 months under Stalins collectivisation and dekulakization of agriculture in the early 1930s. The Peasants actually fought against it and the authorities at one point believed they would lose control of the Ukraine, and in places they did. It almost won its independence in the early 1920s as did Poland and the Baltic states. One of the reasons why Stalin made his pact with Germany was to get back the western provinces he lost, his only defeat. The crushing of these countries at the start of the war was revenge for that humiliation! The justification for Russia’s actions in the Ukraine is now about defending Russian native speakers from Fascists (the greatest insult you can give a Russian!) The propaganda message is to reinforce Russian isolation and being surrounded by America, Obama is made out to be an anti-Russian beast! Much of this is a reworking of soviet propaganda of which Putin as an ex KGB man knew so well as an intelligence officer in Germany.
