Last night was so strange... there was a big wind, a big boom and no rain. 5:20pm. No electricity. So I called SWEPCO and they are already on it. After about 30 minutes, I walked outside. And there are PEOPLE out and about. I met a neighbor who has lived there for 20 years. In the past it was a strain between her and everyone else...but I think that vanished when we all stood in her front yard and talked. I visited wiht other neighbors, read a book, in the absolute quiet. Got to thinking...when I was little I only knew 1 family with air conditioning. It was not us. But we had ways to cope. So here is a snapshot of Texas, 1957, August. --Grannies wore cotton dresses. Cotton undies, bonnets. --We had cold plates to eat. No one cooked a thing in the kitchen. Tuna salad, cucumbers with oil vinigar, onions in the frig, Peach halves with cream cheese, fruit, --We had an attic fan. The whoop, woop would put me sleep faster than our preacher. About 2am I would wake up freezing. --We wore shorts, shirts, no shoes from May to September. I had feet like leather. --In the evening, neighbors would gather under the trees and drink beer and Iced tea. Dont ask me if it was sweet...this is the south, of course it was sweet. --If we got thursty, turn on the hose. We certainly did not have a neighbor 3 houses down that we did not know fro 20 years.... The power came on a few minutes after 1. The house came back to life and I pulled a blanket up. Nice evening.
