Last night we end our 6th day of remote tent camping.. sitting a top of 1 of many Sand Dunes of the Great Sand Dunes National Park watching the sunset create shadows off the vastness of dunes climbing from 250-750 feet.. sandwiched between 14000 feet of deep blue mountains and a sea of yellow flowers on the other side as far as the eye could see.. we were not alone as others (including herds of deer) came to end the day in quiet beauty & stillness in gratitude. Some came late signaling they were heading to the tallest peak.. we had heard earlier during our 675 foot morning climb that some would throw glow sticks on top and camp overnight.. kids came sporting sleds not caring that it was getting dark & happy they could feel the cooled down sand between their toes... Camp fires awaited as many more came for weekend bonding.. it did not seem to matter there was no cell service (although we wondered what would we do in an emergency), that bear awareness signs and stories of mountain lions made one fall asleep with ears open ready to react... that their were no showers in this remote area (so we all smelled of camp fires together) where the nearest town is 35 miles away.. Nevertheless I am grateful for the sound of families laughing and children running around spotting deer.. grateful that I was not eaten by bears and during the rising sun able to walk over fresh new sand where all signs of human activities were replaced by fresh animal prints formed as many of us slept... and for the mama and baby deer who greeted us good morning as we begin a new day where we get to create new stories.
