Last night we listened to the William Byrd Singers perform an excellent interpretation of Rachmaninovs a cappella choral piece, Vespers: The All-Night Vigil, Op. 27. Being the son of a very accomplished pianist, I know Rachmaninov primarily for his piano solo and orchestral compositions. I was unaware of this choral piece, which is quite extraordinary. It was original written in 1915, but the first time it was recorded was in 1965, by the State Academic Russian Choir of the USSR, directed by Aleksandr Sveshnikov. This link is to that first recording, which is an excellent version. Particularly listen to the depth of the bases. Really worth a listen, with good quality headphones. youtube/watch?v=rWKA7i_JJ2M
