Last nights Mastodon concert was an unexpected, yet awesome way to spend Halloween night. I won the tickets via the website Metal Injection on the second attempt. Tickets were given away for every stop on this leg of the tour as it was when they last played NYC on the first leg at Terminal 5 back in May. After foolishly turning down the Thievery Corporation tickets back I won in August, I wasnt going to make the same mistake twice. And thus the so the sojourn to the Paramount Theater in Huntington, Long Island began after work. The trip to LI from Jamaica station was easy enough, finding the venue wasnt. I spent half an hour walking in one direction, only to get lost. I walk back to the train station and kept walking the long road down New York Avenue and felt a sigh of relief when I finally saw the theaters marquee. At will call, I got an envelope with a GA wrist band. The Paramount and Irving Plaza where my last GA show happened are similar, seats above and around the floor. Around 7:15PM, the music got progressively louder, it was Kvelertak opening the show and all the member were in costume and a good chunk of the attendees in the audience were too. Around 8:30PM, the next support act shifted from the Norwegian death metal that started the evening to the French heavy metal that was Gojira as the floor got even more packed. At 9:30, the lights went down and the opening notes of Tread Lightly signified Mastodons arrival and the crowed erupted. It was the high energy of the crowd and relentless sound and fury of the band that guided the eighteen song set list that included eight songs off of Once More Round the Sun and the vicious finish of Crystal Skull of 2006s Blood Mountain and Blood and Thunder from 2004s Levathian. There was one tiny quibble: It seemed like guitarist Bill Kellihers mike was turned way down, you couldnt hear his parts nearly as well as the rest of the band. But that doesnt detract from a great show from all three bands. I would have pictures of the show but the venues website didnt allow it, even though that rule wasnt really enforced as I saw plenty of smartphones and a few cameras out. On the trip home, the month changed from October to November and for all the exhaustion felt, the doldrums of the last two weeks ceased to exist. And that reason is why live music is so important to me
