Last week, Australian Pig Farming: The Inside Story revealed footage which, for the first time, shows a process of ‘humane slaughter’ in which pigs are gassed before having their throats cut. The images were filmed by activists over three days in February at a facility owned by Australia’s largest pork producer Rivalea and their release has sparked an investigation into the cruelty. While this slaughter method is thought to be the best in the world, these images reveal that pigs who are killed in this way are assured neither a swift nor painless death. They also highlight the critical role of covert surveillance in revealing the truth about how animals raised for food are treated.
