Last week, CRFC hosted the Summer Institute Mock Trials. The Mock Trial provides 7th and 8th grade teachers with materials and strategies to effectively carry out a mock trial in the classroom. Last week, we discussed a challenging case – Weber v. Chase (a civil case about cyber bullying). It comprised of multiple claims involving actual and punitive damages. 16 teachers from 12 Chicago Public Schools and 4 Catholic Schools participated, expertly coached by Kirkland & Ellis attorneys Ben Kurtz and Charles Kalil II. Teachers did a remarkable job preparing their cases in a mere hour, taking the roles of plaintiff and defense attorneys and presenting opening statements, closing arguments, along with questioning the witnesses Grace Itter from Edison Park Elementary School made the opening statement for the defendant presenting a vigorous defense, whereas Daniel Weber from Nobel Elementary School presented a powerful opening statement for the plaintiff, which ultimately led to the jury ruling in favor of plaintiff - on some but not all the claims. It was great way for teachers to become familiar with a mock trial in order to better prepare their students for the experience, from witness preparation, correct questioning of witnesses under oath, and making objections during the trial.
