Last week I attended a lecture pertaining to conservation biology - TopicsExpress

Last week I attended a lecture pertaining to conservation biology with an audience of undergraduate seniors, masters and doctoral students. A few minutes into the lecture the professor asked if we thought the current global culture was capable of making the necessary changes to fix the current rapid decline of our environments. 68% of the students attending said “No” or that they were unsure, with only the remaining 32% thinking a change could be made. It is heartbreaking for me to hear that the next generation of conservation biologists has such a bleak outlook with regards to a positive change. Moreover the concept of “self-fulfilling prophecy” comes to mind when the people who are required to make a change for the betterment of our planet don’t think change is in the realm of possibility. Through my very minimal global exposure to conservation issues, I do have the hope that change is possible and not entirely difficult with proper personnel, budget, and timing. But what are you’re thoughts; is a cultural paradigm shift towards actively practicing conservation in a more global scale possible in our lifetimes?
