Last week, I had a chance to visit Thomson Public School, supported by Samanvaya Foundation, to observe the implementation of Karadi Paths Magic English SLL program. This year, Samanvaya is implementing the Karadi Path programme in government schools in Bangalore. Each school has a slightly different implementation scenario. In this video of Thomson school, for example, due to the low per-class enrollment, what youre looking at here is a class that combines students from class 3 all the way up to class 8. In other schools, there may be more clustering of age groups. In all cases, Samanvaya appoints the teachers, who conduct the Karadi Path sessions as well as sessions in science and mathematics. Speaking with Madhu and Mala (the Samanvaya appointed teachers), they mention that the setup actually works out quite nicely, with the older students supporting the language development of the younger ones. As teachers, they also try to modify their expectations of the students of each age group according to their capabilities. For instance, they try to make sure that the older children develop their reading skills more quickly while they focus on comprehension and expression of the younger students. Heres a clip of the students at Thomson Public School singing and miming along to the song Ganga Yamuna Krishna, led by Madhu.
