Last week, I had the opportunity to spend some time on the Pine - TopicsExpress

Last week, I had the opportunity to spend some time on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Shannon County (soon to be renamed Oglala Lakota County) is comprised entirely of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and is consistently listed as one of the top three poorest counties in America...which is not surprising given the per capita income is just under $6,300. It was an amazing, eye-opening, heart-wrenching experience to visit with some of the Lakota people that live there. Id like to think what I experienced, the living conditions I encountered, the people I met, and the moments of coincidence and grace that seemed supernatural will all tug at my heart forever, but I guess only time will tell. Id also like to think that the van loads of coats, warm clothing, and bedding that we (a small group of us from Lakeland Church) lugged out there will help meet a few basic needs. And I am grateful for the new found friendships I have in Andrew J. Huddleston, Gretchen A. Biere, Rachel Woods, Karley Lynne, Seth Huddleston, Jonathan Prescott Kelley, Jonathon Argot, Joey Rumpel, Tim Robbins, Carol Larson, and Mark Anderson - each of whom I witnessed display self-sacrificing love and whom made me laugh...a lot. :)
