Last week I was able to meet and converse (to some extent) with a neighbor named Mercedes. It was a pleasant conversation that began as I picked up Pine Cones. Im still not certain what his mother used to do with Pine Cones after baking them. He said that they didnt eat them. Soon, we were speaking of church and I tried to explain the gospel in my poor Spanish and invite him to church. Today, a woman came to the steps of the church and I saw her from the corner of my eye. (Sister Anne left the outside door open when she departed) She was weeping terribly and was dressed in a way that suggested to me that she is from an Islamic background. Her head was covered, but she held up her hands in obvious prayer. I came out of the office and asked her if she would like to go inside the chapel and pray and she nodded, still weeping and sobbing. I opened the door and a man who I assumed was her husband came from the street to join her. They removed their shoes as they entered and went to the altar and prayed briefly. As the man walked by the open display Bible he brushed it with his fingers in what appeared to be a loving gesture. When he reached the back of the church, where I was sitting in quiet prayer for their pain I asked him if I might inquire what has happened. His answer was simple No English She came back and I asked her if they had received some bad news and her response was My Son... in Aghanistan... I dont know what the bad news was-- but it was obviously bad. They thanked me and quickly departed. But for a brief moment I was glad we have a church in a neighborhood and I am glad that I get the opportunity to be here during the week.... For these people were some I had greeted when I was out watering, taking out the trash, or passing out flyers. I had met them before... Now, I got a chance to show just a little bit of the love of Christ for them. and now.,. I ask you to pray for whatever their sorrow is this day.
