Last week, several people contacted me regarding concerns over an article published by the BBC, warning parents against tight swaddling. While I agree that infants should not be so tightly swaddled that their legs or arms are severely restricted, the claims that swaddling causes hip dysplasia are highly over-dramatized. In reality, hip dysplasia effects 1-3% of babies. The top causes for DDH are genetics, breech birth and the use of baby carriers which do not properly support the child (ex: crotch danglers which force the legs to hang and does not allow the nature position of being held). For more information and a video on safe swaddling, check this out: nct.org.uk/parenting/how-do-i-swaddle-my-baby And you can read ALL ABOUT swaddling in my 3-part guest post: iamnotthebabysitter/swaddling-putting-all-the-myths-to-bed/
