Last week the Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin, visited the Netherlands where he met his Dutch colleague Dutch chief of Defence, General Tom Middendorp, in The Hague. Together they visited the Rijksmuseum where they admired the Dirk Hartog dish (1616) and the Night Watch, painted in 1642 by Rembrandt van Rijn. On his Facebook page General Middendorp wrote that Australia and the Netherlands have a lot in common and have been able to find each other over the past years. “In Afghanistan and the Ukraine we have stood side by side, even under hard conditions. These experiences have strengthened our trust and enduring ties”. Middendorp expects our countries will often need each other again in the future.
