Last week the NTSB Board met to discuss the railroad accident report on the November 2012 derailment in Paulsboro, NJ. One of the issues discussed was the exposure of emergency responders to the hazardous materials release. NTSBs Steve Blackistone, a long-time volunteer firefighter in Maryland, talks about the unique challenges of responding to a hazmat release and the importance of developing effective hazmat response plans before an incident occurs.
