Last week, the Vice President embarked on his fourth trip to Latin America, traveling to Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Brazil. Vice President Biden joined 15 member states in signing the United States – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA). The Agreement provides a strategic framework for member states managing trade and investment issues. To read more about the agreement click here. To further highlight the United States’ commitment to working with the Caribbean on economic growth and development issues, the White House also released a fact sheet on their ongoing partnerships. Read it here. On Friday, President Obama met with student leaders, and urged Congress to enact a comprehensive solution that would keep subsidized student loan interest rates at current levels. Absent congressional action, the interest rate on new subsidized student loans will double to 6.8 percent on July 1 of this year. Last week also marked the first-ever White House Hispanic Business Leaders’ Forum, held in conjunction with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC). The day-long event engaged representatives from the private sector with Administration officials to discuss the economy, innovation and entrepreneurship, health care, federal contracting and commonsense immigration reform. Throughout the month, the President also took time to recognize several dedicated Latinos through recent nominations and appointments. In addition to the recent nomination of Katherine Archuleta as Director of the Office of Personnel Management, Latinos continue to be appointed across the Administration to support the President’s Agenda, including: Alejandra Ceja – Appointed as the director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics Anne L. Alonzo – Appointed as the Administrator for the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) agency of the USDA’s Marketing and Regulatory Programs Daniel Sepulveda – Nominated for the rank of Ambassador in honor of his service as Deputy Assistant Secretary for International Communications and Information Policy at the Department of State Joe Echevarria – Appointed as a Member of the Presidential Commission on Election Administration We have also recently launched a NEW weekly address that is focused on issues important to the Latino community.
