Last week, we shared with you one of our newest projects at Quinones Design/Build, a total renovation to a local farmhouse that was built in 1941. From ground up, we will be bringing this historic home into the 21st century while preserving its original charm and its farming family’s legacy. Although the the outbreak of World War II in 1941, perpetuated a radical modernization of the electrical industry, by today’s standards rural home wiring of years gone by presents many challenges. Our farmhouse renovation is no exception! Only four main circuits power the home and its surrounding areas, and the farmhouse has no common grounding system. (A grounding system is now required by code to ensure that your home’s electrical system is not damaged by lightening or other high charge build ups, as well as to reduce shock hazard.) In addition, all of the original farmhouse wiring is cloth insulated. (Depending upon the condition of the wiring’s insulation, this could be a hidden hazard. Should the cloth insulation crack or disintegrate with age and wires come in contact, a chance of a short or a fire can exist. This older style electric wiring also can make it difficult for the homeowner to obtain insurance, or at the very least increase homeowners’ insurance premiums.) Next week, see how the farmhouse is progressing and exactly how it is being bought up to modern day electrical codes.
