Last weekend, received all three baseball cards I had sent to Juan Samuel back signed. Samuel who is now 1st Base Coach for the Phillies, grew up in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, one of 76 men from that city to play major league baseball. Samuel played in the majors from 1983 through 1998, playing for the Phillies, Mets, Dodgers, Royals, Reds, Tigers and Blue Jays. He won an NL Championship in 1983 with the Phillies. He was an All-Star in 1984, 1987 and 1991. He won an NL Silver Slugger Award in 1987. He retired with 161 career homers, 1, 578 career hits. After retiring as a player, Samuel was the first base coach for the Tigers from 1999 through 2004 and was third base coach for them in 2005. He was the Manager of the AA affiliate of the Mets in 2006. He was third base coach of the Orioles from 2007 until 2010 when he was named interim Manager of the team. After the 2010 season he left the Orioles organization and he was third base coach of the Phillies in 2011 and 2012 and this season is the Phillies first base coach.
