Last year around this time, I had the opportunity to attend the high school reunion of the class that graduated the year before. The trip gave me the opportunity to reconnect with old friends, visit some old haunts, etc. I even got to perform 3 comedy shows, 2 of which I headlined. I toured my old high school and was reminded that while it may not have been inherently bad, I didn’t belong there and never did. Sadly, when you open up Pandora’s box, it’s never easy to get everything back in. I was reminded how difficult my high school years were; at home, at school, etc. I was reminded of the times I was powerless, receiving abuse from bullies, teachers, parents, etc. Like a bad viral clip, the dark times played in my head on repeat. I focused so much on the hell I went through, I almost forgot I GOT THROUGH IT! I came out the other side! Before Dan Savage gave the wisdom, I faced everyday with the belief “things get better,” and they have. My reunion is August 17th. I’m not sure I can make it due to various reasons. However, on August 19th, I’m putting all the memories back in the drawer. Maybe I’ll visit them again in another 10 years. I can’t change the past and I’ve come a long way since then. I can only move forward.
