Last year around this time, I submitted conceptual designs for artwork that could be a part of the transformations of Lansing Community College’s campus. I met with the Office of the President to get a good idea of what they were looking for and after meeting with them, I went home and began brainstorming and sketching ideas on paper. A couple of months later, I received a phone call telling me that four of my designs were chosen and that fabrication on these sculptures would begin. Five students submitted designs, but only two of us were selected. My inspiration truly came from students just like me. I wanted to incorporate items that could speak of any college student to anyone; no matter what their story is. The sculptures have now been placed on campus with my name engraved in a plaque next to them. A significant amount of money has been invested in these so that they become landmarks of the college’s campus for years to come. Last Friday, I was invited to attend the official unveiling ceremony at the college. I immediately felt like I was at home when I arrived on campus; it was great to see many familiar faces again. To be honest, I felt like a celebrity because numerous media outlets such as WILX, WLNS, FOX 47, LSJ, etc. were present and I definitely didn’t expect that! Once the ceremony had ended, I was interviewed by the Lansing State Journal and WLNS News (if you didn’t see it- I was on the front page article of last weekend’s LSJ). Seeing my sculpture designs go from paper to three-dimensional, life-sized sculptures (up to 30ft tall) is literally surreal to me. I was honored to be recognized at this ceremony. I had an amazing college career at LCC and these sculptures will enable me to leave behind a physical legacy for decades to come. If you’re ever in the Lansing area, go check them out!
