Last year without electricity I told some old stories, I may have already told a version of this story, but I will share anyway. I was in Fiji,for New Years before moving on to New Zealand, then Australia, for just about three months. I went to a Fijian resort that had both accommodation for high end guests and dorm style bunk bed Backpacker rooms. It was several days before New Years, The mix of guests included Rastafarian Australian Surfers, people like my self and a few couples, the couple I became friends with, were from England, a boxer and his newlywed. The most amazing guest to me, were a husband and wife and there two daughters, it was a long time ago, but I would say 8 and 10 years old. They walked into the dorm room, The dorm room was a large thatched roof hut , with shared male and female bunk beds and washrooms. The girls walked in wide eyed and frightened so did the parents, all though trying to keep it cool. They scanned the room looking for beds together as men and women in various states of undress(surfers) came out of the showers. Of course being the only Canadian in the building I felt the need to make them comfortable, I introduced myself gave them the lay of the land and got them situated in beds, you could literarily see the weight lifted. I think I told the story of the impending triple typhoon, flying Coconuts, the bridge washing away just before paying a cab driver five times his fee to cross it. but I dont think I talked about New Years Eve. The Surfers went to town and picked up a lot of Kava Root, we sat outside listened to music and soaked the root threw an old sock and warm water, it kind of tastes like dirt, the first thing to go is your tongue, completely numb, then your body kind of follows. We were completely surrounded by Cane Toads, when I picked one up and did the whole Hello My Baby routine, I got a standing O when at the finally the Toad Peed on me .
