Late day TODAYs TIP: Some events that transpired this week have inspired me to write tonights post on a whim. ARE YOU LOOKING TO ADD A DOG TO YOUR FAMILY? Yes? Then please: 1) Consider adoption from a local SHELTER or through a local RESCUE ORGANIZATION. But I want a purebred Cool! Did you know about 75% of dogs sitting in shelters or rescues are purebred? Please remember that purebred means NOTHING other than the ability to trace a dogs lineage. It does not guarantee quality of any kind. But I want a specific breed Sweet! Every purebred breed out there has breed-specific rescue organizations that take in only abandoned or dumped dogs of one specific breed. Do a Google search for Bulldog rescue of America or Golden Retriever rescue of America to be led to the homepage with links to breed-specific rescue organizations near you. 2) Purchase from a REPUTABLE breeder ONLY!!!!! But I dont want a show dog Did you know most puppies in any given litter are NOT show material? Reputable breeders offer pet dogs along with show prospects. 3) AVOID BYBs (Back yard breeders)!!! How to identify a BYB: -Sells to anyone who shows up with cash. -Sells online on breeder websites that sell all sorts of breeds. First person to pay or put a deposit gets a dog. -Advertises in local Penny Saver or newspaper, Craigslist or Ebay. -Has NO proof of health clearances, show titles on the parents, or temperament tests of puppies in each litter. -Charges exorbitant prices for mutts (such as Morkies, Malshis, Teacup Chihuahuas, Teddy Bear Poms, etc.) -Believes these mutts are quality special dogs worth the money charged. -Breeds their dog before the age of two. FOUR MILLION DOGS DIE IN SHELTERS EVERY YEAR! It is NOT the reputable breeders putting them there! It is irresponsible people looking to make money off their dogs and selling to un-educated-in-dogs-type-people who dont know any better. I urge anyone who thinks breeding the normal family dog is okay to go walk through a city shelters aisles. See the fear, depression and shaking most dogs behind those bars are displaying and I guarantee you will NOT leave the same person you were when you went in. Please, think about it.
