Late in the evening a few nights ago on Lake Holcombe, Wisconsin... The sun was just a memory tucked in behind stretches of dark clouds. It had been stormy all day but now there was not enough wind to even ripple the water. We were anchored in the middle of this good sized flowage, maybe 1/2 mile across and 11 miles long, trying to catch some fish. We did catch a few - maybe a dozen in all. I had hooked a small walleye that swallowed the bait and was suffering the consequences. When he was finally released, you could see he wasnt going to make it. Every few minutes hed make a dying splash on the surface. With the sun almost nonexistent, the visual line between the sky and the water was only distinguishable by the unbroken shoreline of trees. Even the clouds were reflected back into the water making that particular illusion complete. As we sat in silence a soft screeee sound came in from overhead. Looking up, we saw a bald eagle circling above us and almost on cue it swooped down and plucked the doomed walleye from the water about 20 feet from the boat. Oddly, it felt better to me that nothing here was wasted.
