Late night movie: For 1967s In Cold Blood, Richard Brooks chose to film on the original locations, trying to reproduce on film Capote’s supposed capturing of the complete story, including the home of the murder victims, their pictures, and the actual gallows used to hang the killers. Columbia Pictures even went so far as to use the eyes of the real killers on the movie poster. Brooks brings out the ugly side of both murderers, as well as their human flaws. Underlying the violence is a juxtaposition of those who have succeeded in the world of American capitalism – the farmer with his life insurance policy, the large bright home, the material possessions – and those who have failed and will do anything to cheat the system which has locked them into an underworld. Robert Blake is drunk on the American dream, in the get-rich-quick variety. Thoughts?
