Later this week I think I will do an in depth talk about vitamin B12 & B12 deficiency and history of where we got this vitamin and why so many foods are now fortified with it in spite of most Westerners eating a meat rich diet. This is also the last refuge of those who claim people like me, who eat plant based diets, are eating a bad diet as this is the one vital micronutrient that is not found naturally in current plant based foods the way we grow and eat them today. However by that same token there are bodybuilders & athletes eating 300g a day of animal source protein who are consuming below the RDA on this vitamin as well because some of the most popular animal source foods by these individuals are also not a source capable of providing enough for proper long term health either. This is ironic considering we only need trace amounts of it and at one time it was so plentiful in everyones diet around the world that many people consumed more than they needed even when starving to death due to low calories. It is a very interesting and complex vitamin and the only one that neither plants nor animals are capable of producing themselves in a biologically active form.
