Latest figures have revealed that self-employment is at its highest level for at least 40 years with 4.6m people in the UK now working for themselves. Self-employment is an attractive proposition for people who want to make a business out of their passion, who want complete freedom to develop and implement their ideas or who want to work in a more flexible way that supports their lifestyle. The figures also reveal that the number of women in self-employment is increasing at a faster rate than the number of men, although the latter still greatly outweigh the former when it comes to working for themselves. And the number of over 65s in self-employment has more than doubled during the past five years to almost half a million people. In addition to specific occupational skills, research by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills has shown that the following competencies are required for success in self-employment: - Values, beliefs and attitudes (e.g. action orientation, desire for independence, initiative, creativity); - Soft skills including interpersonal, communication and networking skills; - Realistic awareness of the risks and benefits of self-employment; - Functional business skills (financial, HR management, market research); - Relevant business knowledge (legislative, taxation, sources of finance). Being able to speak authentically and powerfully to an audience and to camera is therefore an important skill to develop, as this will enable you to build rapport and trust with your clients and potential business prospects. In today’s media landscape, business owners should be planning how to incorporate online video into marketing strategies, as this is one of the most powerful ways to connect with audiences, enabling them to gain a strong sense of who you are and the credibility of your product or service. https://vimeo/104490588
