Latest update from the Town of High River (5:30 p.m., Thursday afternoon) -- River rising slowly, still expected to peak at midnight: The Highwood River continues to rise at a slower rate. Recent data from Alberta Environment is suggesting the river has risen to 3 metres and is flowing at 263 cms according to the gauge located below the Little Bow Canal. It is still expected to peak at midnight. Town staff continue to conduct periodic inspections around town and barricades have been established at the entrance to Wallaceville to limit access to local residents only. “We would like the general public to stay away from this area of town,” said Len Zebedee, deputy director of emergency operations. “We would also urge motorists not to stop on the Centre Street bridge as this causes a safety hazard and slows traffic flow through town.” There is no concern for flooding in other areas of town at this time but there is potential for groundwater to seep into basements and home owners are again reminded to check their sump pumps and ensure eaves troughs are directing water away from their properties. There are also some areas in town experiencing pooling from the excessive precipitation. “There are some ponds, such as Vista Mirage, which have experienced an increase in levels due to the rainfall but there is no concern for nearby homeowner,” said Zebedee. There is an excavator/back hoe on site at Centre Street Bridge as a precautionary measure in case of debris getting caught on the bridge. The Town will continue to monitor the situation and the next scheduled update will be at 21:00.
