Lauca National Park, Chile The 138,000 hectares of Lauca - TopicsExpress

Lauca National Park, Chile The 138,000 hectares of Lauca National Park are located in the altiplano of Chile, at a base altitude of 3500 to 4000 meters (11,500-13,000ft). From this lofty height rise majestic snow capped volcanoes, some dormant and others active, that reach 6300 meters (20,800ft). This park, a designated World Biosphere Reserve, contains an incredible array of beauty, from cultural and archaeological landmarks to altiplano llama herders to 150 species of bird. Lago Chungará, one of the world’s highest lakes at 4500 meters, is also located within the park. Vicuña, a wild relative of the llama, can be easily observed throughout the park and the entire altiplano. There are many areas of beauty within Lauca for the visitor. I will mention a few here, but the best is to consult the experienced rangers at the CONAF station in Las Cuevas. They will show you maps, explain the history of the area as well as share their knowledge of the native flora and fauna.
