~ Laurel Court, completed in 1907 ~ This beautiful home, considered one of the finest homes in the United States, was built for Peter G. Thomson, the founder of Champion Paper. It was designed by his wifes nephew, James Gamble Rogers, in the Beaux Arts Neoclassical style. Located at 5870 Belmont Avenue, it was built from chiseled granite on twenty three acres, at the highest point in Hamilton County. It has a retractable roof over the two story atrium in the center of the house, a Rookwood swimming pool, an African rosewood library, and a gilded music room. Today, it stands on seven and a half acres of land, and the many original buildings, gardens, statues and fountains are open for tours and special events by reservation only. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
