Laurel Outlook question 5: Yellowstone County is 2,649 square - TopicsExpress

Laurel Outlook question 5: Yellowstone County is 2,649 square miles, with widely varying geography and population densities. How would you prioritize the patrol and enforcement efforts in the different regions of the county? Our Sheriff’s deputies are already receiving assignments based on manpower and statistical information determining where calls for service are being generated. One of the most important things I can do is continue to provide our deputies with tools, training and technology needed to keep them on the streets in their assigned areas and ready to respond to whatever comes their way. In the past, deputies were required to return to the office to complete reports and in some cases conduct follow up. Obviously, time spent in the office is time away from the vital function of patrolling areas to prevent crime. By continually updating technology, deputies are now able to complete and transmit report data from their cars to their supervisors for review and records management purposes. There is no question that our deputies in Yellowstone County are some of the best trained and best equipped law enforcement officers in this part of the country. A prime example of this is the thermal imaging capabilities and night vision equipment immediately available to all deputies. I have also recently taken delivery on new patrol rifles that will be assigned to our deputies so that they no longer have to purchase and use their own for Sheriff’s Office duties. Rifles are a vital tool for our deputies when working in rural areas where backup can be miles away. Recently, I am transitioning towards AWD SUVs using more fuel efficient engines that allow our deputies better access to rural areas in winter conditions.
