Law School Center Releases Med Mal Statistical Primer Riding a seven-year wave of underwriting profit, Medical malpractice insurance companies are earning twice the profit of the entire property/casualty insurance industry. That shocking statistic is among the findings released this month in the third update of the 110-page briefing book, Medical Malpractice: By the Numbers, produced by New York University School of Laws Center for Justice & Democracy. The book covers a wide range of medical negligence-related topics, ranging from patient safety and defensive medicine to access to health care and health care costs. Alarming determinations by researchers include: **A rise in the rate of preventable errors in Texas after the Lone Star state imposed a cap on damages and other restrictions on medical negligence lawsuits; **Medicare being billed $7 million in 2012 collectively by eight physicians whose medical licenses were suspended or revoked; **One in 25 patients daily on average contracting an infection during their hospitalization.
