Lay The First Stone* In the sixth century B.C., the Chinese philosopher Laozi wrote this proverb: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Around that same time, the prophet Zechariah spoke on behalf of God to the Israelites who had returned to Jerusalem from captivity in Babylon. Their task was to rebuild the temple. Regarding that task, Zechariah said, For who has despised the day of small things? To rebuild the temple is like making a journey of a thousand stones which will have to begin with the first one, then the next, then the next, and finally the last. It is the nature of kingdom work to start small like a mustard seed, and end much larger- like a large tree. Finding and laying that first stone can be a challenge of faith. But once you have begun the journey, every step after the first grows stronger and more confident. If there is something you want to do or build for God, dont despise the day of small beginnings. *Adapted from Destination by Dr David Jeremiah
