Le Weekend features Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan as Nick and Meg, a couple of embittered academics who decide to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary by spending a weekend in Paris. Scripted by Hanif Kureishi (who recently voiced his opinion on the joys of academia only to inspire a furore amongst the literati) and competently directed by Roger Michell, the film consists mostly of the couple bickering their way around the French capital, before eventually bumping into Nicks old university chum, Morgan (Jeff Goldblum). Morgan is a successful author, who has recently remarried and is forging what looks like a an exciting lifestyle in Paris. But when he invites the British couple to a dinner party at his rather swish apartment, old resentments come bubbling to the surface... The film is no doubt intended to make us laugh, but rarely manages more than a feeble chuckle, largely because Meg appears to have the disposition of a rattlesnake with a mouth ulcer and Nick is just plain miserable. The whole affair limps painfully along, occasionally sparking into life, only to fizzle out again and matters arent helped by a lack of resolution in the final scenes. Un cause celebre? Non! 2.1 stars.
