LeBron James coming back to Cleveland? Most sports fans like the idea -- Terry Pluto CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Do you have the sense that many of the nations sports fans are pulling for LeBron James to return to Cleveland? A Today Show poll had 62 percent of people saying James should pick the Cavaliers, the rest believing he should stay in Miami. An ESPN Sports Nation poll with 79,388 votes had 43 percent favoring the Cavs, 36 percent favoring another team, and 21 percent favoring his return to the Heat. The Heat have been to four consecutive finals, and have won two titles. But most sports fans want to break up Miamis Big Three -- and they want James to come home. Remember, these are national polls -- not just Cavs fans from Northeast Ohio. A lot of fans just dont like the Miami Heat. It probably has to do with how the team was assembled. Dwyane Wade recruited Chris Bosh and James. And James made a major public relations blunder in his Decision Show on ESPN. It certainly seemed more fans were delighted when Dallas upset the Heat in the 2011 NBA Finals. The same was true when the Spurs dumped Miami in the 2014 Finals. The point is a return to Cleveland will enhance the image of James on a national level. The casual sports fan likes the homecoming story, at least if you accept the poll results. If there was a sense that James ran from the challenge of trying to turn his home pro team into a title winner in 2010 -- it would be just the opposite this time. Its as if James would be viewed as making things right after his move to Miami felt so wrong -- at least in the beginning. James would be seen as boldly stepping into a situation that has been in a basketball dungeon ever since he left. The record is 97-215 since his departure. Many fans like the idea of the four-time MVP coming home to try and lead his old team out of the basketball wilderness. If the Cavs make a major deal for someone such as Kevin Love afterwards -- great. But James is making the first move, then waiting to see what the Cavs can do to bolster the roster. Its James leading -- not following, as it appeared in 2010. And it seems most of the nations fans like the idea.
