Leaders tribute By Adrian Rasin The President of the Autonomous Bougainville Government Chief Dr John Momis yesterday paid tribute to leaders of Papua New Guinea who ensured the Independence of the country was achieved. President Momis acknowledged the leaders, most of whom are now dead, during the celebration of the Independence Day in Buka. He said, prior to the country becoming independent, there was a lot of fear on how a conglomerate of about eight hundred tribes could be united as a country, with the fear being further strengthened by people who were cynical of Papua New Guinea being handed their freedom. Mr Momis said there was still a psychological dependency on Australia during that time, but because of the leadership of Sir Michael Somare, and the support of leaders such as Sir Julius Chan, Sir Tei Abal, Sir Maori Kiki and many others, the country managed to gain its Independence peacefully. President Momis said, the determination of Sir Michael and his group of leaders, resulted in what the people wanted, although they had no experience, and there were no answers to a lot of things. President Momis, speaking during Bougainville’s celebration of the 39th Anniversary of Papua New Guinea at Lonahan Primary School yesterday. Ends
