Leadership Food for Thought - 9/25/2013 A real leader does what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, whether or not they want to do it. - Unknown There are a couple of quotes that have been firmly affixed in my mind. This is one of them. Ironically the two biggest ones didn’t come from any of my business classes, nor from leadership camps or seminars; they both were tattered, old, faded pieces of paper hand-stapled above the water fountain in the weight lifting room of my high school. Every time I went to get water between sets I would read these quotes and they have become part of my mantra. Maybe instead of focusing on the words, though I think this quote is one of the best I have come across, today I would like to talk about what we surround ourselves with and what we reinforce in our daily lives. Affirmations can be powerful things and it amazes me some of the things I have told myself for a very long time. The biggest one being I am not a good trumpet player. Not that it hasn’t been true mind you. I have had to completely relearn how to play my horn over the past couple of years. But every day instead of thinking I am a developing trumpet player, I would semi-jokingly refer to myself as a bad player. The results? Very little desire to put myself out there are a player even though I really do want to be good enough to solo. Sometimes I really do wish I had the “Trumpet Ego,” but at best it would be false-bravado. Now looking back at it, I wish I could have affirmed that I was a developing player instead. Then maybe my outlook as I develop my abilities as a soloist would be far and away less negative. So now I open up the question to you. What do you affirm about yourself? How does affect your work and life? What are some of the negative things you tell yourself that you can let go of or change?
