Leadership Lessons from the Presidential Elections in Sri Lanka There is going to be quite a lot of political postmortem done about what happened in Sri Lanka with one of the most powerful Presidents losing the Election -first time a sitting President losing Election. But there are some leadership lessons to be drawn from this episode. Here are my quick takes: 1. Power cannot be with you forever and there is absolutely nothing you can do to stay on. 2. Success and achievements can make one blind to the obvious fault - lines or weak points. 3. Sometimes those closer to you can be your biggest adversaries. 4. Your past successes, howsoever big those may be, cannot guarantee that you will succeed next time. 5. Overconfidence is not a virtue nor is over-concentration of power and authority. 6. You need to constantly win the confidence of those who you are working with and can’t assume absolute loyalty as given. 7. Accept the outcome with humility and move on.
