Leaning tree: special report After 24 hours of terror there is still no end in sight for the inhabitants of Petersfield. The drama started on Monday afternoon when one of the many lime, or linden (https://youtube/watch?v=aHze0SqB5Zg&feature=youtube_gdata_player), trees on St Peters Rd finally succumbed to wind and weight of leaves and started listing badly. The police responded swiftly and by late afternoon the road had been sealed off, regrettably making it almost impossible to access the town centre. The same police were later witnessed fleeing the scene fearing for their own safety. In an act that can only be described as anarchic, the police barriers have been moved by angry motorists, but too late for some. The manager of a nearby coffee shop is incensed over the reduced parking availability saying I had to walk an extra 2 minutes to work. Bewildered local residents, frustrated by the apparent lack of communication between authorities and tree, have taken to social media sites to express their dissatisfaction with the floral furore. One resident has even gone so far as to ask, What about the children? while another commented This is as much excitement weve seen round here since someone was stabbed in the market square. Reports are now surfacing that police are considering sealing off the whole of Petersfield until the arboreal menace can be dealt with, so great is the threat it represents. Only one thing is certain, these are uncertain times for the people of Petersfield.
