Learn Our History Today: On July 27, 1953, the Korean War came to an end after three years of fighting. The Korean War had begun in June 1950, with a massive North Korean attack into South Korea, forcing back all opposing troops. However, the United States quickly entered the war, and following a daring landing at the port of Inchon, the North Koreans were pushed back to their border. U.S. forces did not stop there. They continued to push the North Koreans, finally stopping at the Chinese border. The fact that U.S. and South Korean troops were right on their doorstep did not sit well with China, and so, during the winter of 1950, the Chinese entered the war, launching heavy attacks on American and South Korean forces. The U.S. forces and their allies were slowly driven back to an area around the previous North Korea/South Korea border. There the war stayed, quickly boiling down into a war of attrition with neither side gaining any ground. By July 1953, both sides were sick of the constant bloodshed, and on July 27 an armistice was agreed upon which established a new border between North and South Korea and created a demilitarized zone between the two counties. The war had cost millions of Korean and Chinese lives, in addition to over 50,000 Americans.
