Learned colleagues,in less than two weeks from now,our association goes to the poll to elect officers who will pilot the affairs of the Bar for the next two years. The stakes are high.There is intense campaigning as candidates are criss crossing the length and breath of this country sourcing for votes. I wish to send a note of warning.NBA had never had it so bad like it is under the present leadership.Our voices had been silenced and mortgaged to the piper who is clearly dictating the tune.The NBA has been hijacked by a cabal consisting of few members.Our practice is going extinct as same is being taken over by touts and non professionals.Yet we say and do nothing.We pay exhorbitant practising fees and conference fees,yet we see no help from the national body.The rot has eaten so deep into the system that non lawyers now call our proffession all kinds of names. These problem and other numerous ones came as a result of the choices we made in leadership.When we look over credibility and competence and pick someone who doles out money to delegates,then we will certainly get what we are witnessing today. It is only a fool who does the same thing and expect different results.The season is nigh.We know ourselves.Some candidates have already gotten the endorsement of political parties for sponsorship.Serious money is been used by candidates right now to induce votes.I was in Abuja about two weeks ago when the Middle belt and Arewa lawyers forum had their meetings.I know of candidates that are already spending millions transporting chairmen and lawyers from many branches on their campaign train.How on earth did such candidates get such monies? Practise? I think not.We should be careful about making the same mistake we made two years ago.We know the contestants and their capabilities.Let us do the right thing for the sake of our Bar.
