Learners from Emfundisweni Primary School in Alexandra were thrilled to have a new vegetable garden in their own school premises planted this past Saturday. Thirty top Social Sciences learners from Grades 4 to 7 were selected to be part of an educational food security seminar at the school hosted by final-year public relations students from Boston Media House in Sandton. “Besides interactively teaching the children how to plant and take care of vegetable, our team also explained the health benefits of each vegetable they helped to plant in the garden,” said Lethabo Mametja of the students’ media liaisons team. “We also taught them the ‘Going Green’ song as well as quizzed them on topics they had already learnt about such as photosynthesis,” she added. The vegetable garden was created as an annual CSI project with which Boston tasked the learners in order to get them involved in creating sustainable differences in communities. The students split themselves into teams to carry out different roles such as sponsorships, media “We hope they go home to teach their family what they’ve learnt. We also have plans to return to the school before the end of the year, and again next year to gauge the progress and anything which is needed by the school.”
