Learning from Mood Shifts ~ by Beth Mader, bphope blogger The thing about bipolar is that I never truly know when my mood is going to change. I mean, I get inklings, and maybe I should pay more attention. Of course, I know what triggers me big time, and what some obvious dangers are. But those inklings ... After a mood change, even if it’s just been a matter of weeks into recent recovery, it all seems so strange that it even happened at all. Once I feel stable, and more like my true self, the depressed or hypomanic Beth is a distant, uncomfortable memory, though a being I do still understand on the deepest levels. About a year ago, I started working a part-time holiday retail job. As the peak season approached, and stress increased, I started a 2-week hypomanic stretch, though I was fairly unaware of it at the time. I decided I was going to get my PhD in medieval art history at an Ivy League school, on scholarship. This was going to happen by January, of course, and I was telling co-workers about it.
