Learning to maintain and repair your vehicle of choice is a very good way to save money. For example, how many of you have paid for a tune up or a brake change? The average brake job done at a shop will run about $70, and a tune up between $30-60. Brake pads cost about $30, and with basic tools are easy to install. Same with tune ups; whats usually checked when doing a tune up is spark plugs, wires, distributor and coil(s), oil, transmission fluid (gear oil if M/T), brake and steering fluid, and oil, air and fuel filters. This is at a more thorough shop (most will just check plugs and air filter). Most of which can be checked at home for free with basic hand tools. Same thing applies to bikes: brake pads cost around $10 ($2 if you live near a co-op, like the Bike Oven near Pasadena or the Bikerowave in Culver City), and are simple to install. Cables are another wear item and need to be checked regularly (they cost about $1-3 dollars).
