Leave your ego at the door part#2 The first thing we all need to realize is that the class is not all about us (me). If you are in a group class it is indeed just that, a group. Leaving your ego at the door also means, not being competitive with your fellow drummers at a drum class, listening and making sure you are not playing louder then everyone else, not pushing the rhythm faster then others are capable of and not helping out the teacher, co -teaching when not asked. I was once at a class and one of the students got up and started writing something on the blackboard for the others to see in the middle of the class. If the teacher wanted something written out he or she would have done it themselves. The person writing it out thought they were being helpful, and maybe they were but it was also egotistical from my perspective as they were not invited to do so. If you are not able to understand a part, after a short period of time, jump off a sinking ship. What that means is that you do not want the whole class to stop if you cant get a part. Record it and work on it at home. Dont ask a whole bunch of questions while something is being taught. If the teacher asks if there are any questions, then do so. Classes can get bogged down verbally with too many questions. If you dont understand the parts still after class talk to the teacher or try to get together with other students who understood it better.
