Lebanese families’ sufferings We would like to share with you what we experience on a daily basis during our field visits to the most deprived families, in order to raise awareness on the catastrophic situation of the Lebanese families. Here is one of the many families we visit everyday, with the purpose of integrating them in BASSMA’s all-inclusive rehabilitation and empowerment program. A family of five subsists with only 535$ per month, thanks to the income of the father who is responsible of his elderly parents, his wife and 6-years daughter. He has to pay the monthly rent of 350$ for their one-room house in Dekwaneh, that includes a balcony only. No kitchen, no fridge, etc. and the toilet is on the balcony. To top it all, the father broke his shoulder at work, and stopped working for a while, and couldnt afford to pay his monthly rent, so he was threatened by the owner to fire his family from the so-called house. So he had to return to work, even though his recovery period did not end, which is affecting his shoulder negatively. His wife is very depressed and needs urgent psychological/psychiatric support, as her hands shake all the time. The little girl, despite her young age, tried to commit suicide several times by throwing herself from the balcony. She is very affected by the family situation, knowing that her parents argue all the time. BASSMA will stand on their side by designing an action plan on the short, mid and long-term, that includes help at all levels: psychological/ psychiatric, medical follow-up, education, food and clothing, house refurbishment, and most importantly employment so the family could reach financial and psychological independence.
