Lee Bassett scored a hat trick as Eynesbury Rovers came from 2-1 down to beat Premier Division Yaxley in the Hunts Senior Cup Quarter Final. Yaxley could have taken an 11th minute lead but Andrew Wale produced a superb save, diving to his left to palm the ball away, from Scott Carter’s header. Denny Escorcio twice had shots blocked whilst a long range Ricky Hailstone effort was straight at Wale. Eynesbury created a flurry of chances in the 33rd minute but Aaran Cavill’s shot was scrambled behind for a corner and from the flag kick Ben Cole and then Tom Coles were denied by Aaron Butcher in the Yaxley goal. However, just three minutes later Rovers took the lead when the ball fell kindly for Bassett on the edge of the penalty area and he guided the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. Matt Cook then hit the crossbar from a Yaxley free kick before the visitors equalised three minutes before the break. Hailstone slid the ball through for Matt Cook to fire a low shot into the goal from 16 yards. On the stroke of half time Wale produced another fine save stretching to his right to once again deny Carter. However, He was unable to prevent Carter from putting Yaxley 2-1 ahead in the 52nd minute as the visitor’s broke rapidly from an Eynesbury corner and Hailstone and Escorcio combined to give Carter the chance to slide the ball home. Their lead lasted just three minutes as Ross West fed Jack Weeden on the left wing and he pulled the ball back to the right hand edge of the penalty area for Tom Coles to fire the ball into the roof of the net. From then on Yaxley failed to create a chance and Rovers looked the more likely winners. Stephen Smith, making his Eynesbury debut, shot straight at Butcher as did Ben Colmer when well placed whilst Cavill and Coles both shot wide. The break through came in the 82nd minute when Colmer fed Bassett on the edge of the area. The striker then created space for himself before firing the ball low past Butcher. Just three minutes later he secured his hat trick and Rovers passage to the semi final as he tucked in a shot from an acute angle.
