Left us on this day (Aug. 10) in 2007: Tony Wilson (heart attack while fighting renal cancer, age 57), best remembered as the co-founder/owner of Manchester, UK-based Factory Records - the one-time home of Joy Division, New Order & OMD; he also owned The Hacienda, which became the epicenter of the Manchester music scene of the late-’80s & early-’90s; prior, he was a journalist & Granada TV personality, most notably hosting So It Goes & After Dark; Tony was known as Mr. Manchester for his work in promoting the citys greater cultural status throughout his career; following the news of his death, the Union Jack Flag on Manchester Town Hall was lowered to half mast as a sign of respect; as with everything else in the Factory empire, Tonys coffin was also given a Factory catalogue number - FAC 501; Tony was portrayed by actor Steve Coogan in the 2002 film, 24 Hour Party People…
