Left us on this day (Dec. 10) in 1967: King of Soul Otis Redding (at age 26 in a small aircraft crash that took his life & that of most members of his backing band, The Bar-Kays, on their way to a gig in Madison, Wisconsin); considered one of the greatest singers in the history of popular music, his powerful style influenced other 60s soul artists & helped form the basis of the Stax Sound; after appearing at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, he wrote & recorded (Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay with Steve Cropper, which became the first posthumous US #1 record; The Dock of the Bay reached #1 on the UK Albums Chart, also becoming the first posthumous album to do so; Otis was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 1989, the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994 & was bestowed a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999; Rolling Stone ranked him #21 on their list of The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time & #8 on their list of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time…
