Left us on this day (Jan. 20) in 1999: Bill Albaugh (cause undisclosed, age 53), best remembered as the drummer with 60s Ohio bubblegum-psych pop group, The Lemon Pipers, of 1968 US #1 hit Green Tambourine fame; the song has been credited as being the first bubblegum pop chart-topper; follow-up Rice Is Nice peaked at US #46; the groups aspirations as a straight-up rock band clashed with the pressures put on them by their label, Buddah Records, to stay focused on bubblegum, & the groups two 1968 albums - Green Tamborine & Jungle Marmalade - captured both sides of this tug of war; the band left Buddah in 1969 & soon dissolved...(Warning! Several stuffed animals were harmed in the making of this video clip…)
